{"id":213,"date":"2024-11-29T15:30:42","date_gmt":"2024-11-29T15:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wpmu.mau.se\/msm24group3\/?p=213"},"modified":"2024-12-01T08:54:15","modified_gmt":"2024-12-01T08:54:15","slug":"this-week-in-sweden-the-forced-removal-and-shutdown-of-the-last-pro-palestine-student-encampment-in-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wpmu.mau.se\/msm24group3\/2024\/11\/29\/this-week-in-sweden-the-forced-removal-and-shutdown-of-the-last-pro-palestine-student-encampment-in-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"This Week in Sweden: The Forced Removal and Shutdown of The Last Pro-Palestinian Encampment in Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\r\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\">\u2193<\/h5>\n<h3>\u201cDear all,<\/h3>\n<h3>With great sorrow, we must announce that after nearly 200 days of resistance at Gazaplatsen \u2013 Europe\u2019s last tent camp \u2013 we have been forced to leave the site in our fight against the University of Gothenburg\u2019s veto and the ongoing genocide.\u201d<\/h3>\n<h5>&#8211; GU Students For Palestine<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last week, on Thursday the 21st of November, \u201cGazaplatsen\u201d (the last remaining encampment in Europe) was \u201cofficially\u201d shut down by Swedish police, ironically (and comically) in the name of \u201cfreedom of expression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cWho has ever even seen a liberal demonstrate?\u201d<\/h2>\n<h5>&#8211; Ulrika Stahre, Aftonbladet<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The camp has come to an end because the Liberal Party in Gothenburg applied for and received a demonstration permit for the same location on Friday the 22nd of November, and as Gazaplatsen didn\u2019t have a permit, the notion was trumped by one which did.<\/p>\n<p>The Liberal Party, most notably Axel Darvik, has grown tired of the camp and claims it has been supported politically by the red-green majority in Gothenburg &#8211; who in turn counter by saying it\u2019s been the police\u2019s judgment that has applied.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>&#8220;The demonstration will be about the importance of standing up for freedom of expression, laws and regulations.\u201d<\/h3>\n<h5>&#8211; Axel Darvik, municipal council, Liberal Party Gothenburg<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dagens Nyheter (DN) asked Darvik whether the demonstration was registered precisely because the camp will have to move? To which he replied &#8211; \u201cYes, it has been a purpose, to show that this place should be for all Gothenburg citizens. The same rules must apply to this group as to all others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, DN went on to ask &#8211; isn\u2019t allowing Gazaplatsen to continue representing and valuing freedom of speech? To which he emphasised only if it\u2019s \u201cnot breaking laws and regulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cThe gossip is that Liberalerna used the opportunity for publicity \u2026 not the proudest moment. Unfortunately \u2026 many people want them gone so I guess that\u2019s why.\u201d<\/h2>\n<h5>&#8211; Anonymous source, Liberal Party Gothenburg<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An inside source at the Liberal Party first informed me that \u201cIt\u2019s a difficult situation. I don\u2019t know if the intention from Liberalerna is to get rid of them \u2026 I hope not.\u201d However, later that same day he followed up with &#8211; \u201cthe gossip is that Liberalerna used the opportunity for publicity\u2026 not the proudest moment. Unfortunately .. many people want them gone so I guess that\u2019s why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s true, many people have voiced their contempt for the camp, as can be seen from one petition \u201cShut Down Gazaplatsen\u201d and currently has over 1000 signatures. However, on the very same site (Mitt Skifte) a counter-petition can be found named \u201cLet Gazaplatsen Remain!\u201d Which currently has over 2200 signatures, double the amount for &#8211; than against.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cWhen did it become extreme to protest against war?\u201d<\/h3>\n<h5>&#8211; Cecilia Verdinelli, G\u00f6teborgs-Posten<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Verdinelli at G\u00f6teborgs-Posten (GP) states clearly that the real purpose of Darvik&#8217;s actions is to \u201cdelegitimise and make suspect all solidarity with Gaza.\u201d Shifting the focus from the horror and evil that is happening in Gaza and shining the light \u201con an old man with the wrong flag in Gustaf Adolfs Square.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cOne almost wonders if he has ever heard of freedom of demonstration. Or if he knows what an occupation really means?\u201d<\/h2>\n<h5>&#8211; Valdemar Moller, Tidningen Syre (TS)<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The comical side of this all is seen by Moller at TS, who in reply to Darvik and the Liberal Party mentioning the \u201coccupation\u201d of Vasaplatsen, states &#8211; \u201cit also becomes a bit involuntarily comical considering that it is precisely Israel&#8217;s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza that the students are partly protesting against.\u201d But, a vital difference being that \u201cno one has been murdered, beaten or driven away from Vasaplatsen &#8211; the only thing that the \u2018occupation\u2019 in this case meant was that a few tents were pitched in front of the university building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moller further goes on to say that it\u2019s not so strange that the demonstrators had to move in order for the Liberals to have a demonstration &#8211; \u201cthe freedom of demonstration and expression must of course apply equally to everyone.\u201d But what is, however, is that the pro-Palestinian protesters have not been allowed back to continue their demonstration afterwards (which they were during a similar situation during an election cycle a few months ago).
