In this process, servers heat up rapidly and water systems cool the equipment to keep it functioning. At this pace, in only two years, the <strong>energy consumption<\/strong> by global centres <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/09\/23\/ai-water-usage-droughts-chatgpt-microsoft\/\">could more than double<\/a>, warns the International Energy Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Living in a <strong>drought-prone area<\/strong> makes this alert incredibly tangible and relatable. 2024 has been a year marked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2024\/02\/02\/a-new-climate-reality-spains-drought-stricken-villages-have-been-in-crisis-mode-for-months\">emergency measures<\/a> and water restrictions in countries around the Mediterranean, such as Spain. The low water capacity of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtve.es\/noticias\/20240109\/estado-embalses-espana-datos\/2281701.shtml\">Spanish reservoirs<\/a> has shaped our daily activities, caused <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/economia\/2024-10-13\/la-agricultura-espanola-toca-fondo-casi-tres-anos-de-caidas-ininterrumpidas-y-empleos-en-riesgo.html\">severe crop losses<\/a> and deepened food dependency. As we enter the third year of drought, the situation is not expected to improve with the current climate crisis.<\/p>\n<p>In the water-stressed town of Talavera de la Reina (central Spain), Meta has decided to establish its <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/tecnologia\/2023-05-09\/el-hipercentro-de-datos-de-meta-en-talavera-consumira-mas-de-600-millones-de-litros-de-agua-potable-en-una-zona-en-peligro-de-sequia.html\">largest data centre in Europe<\/a>, which will need more than 600 million litres of drinking water. \u201c[Tech Giants] search depopulated territories with a high unemployment rate (26% in Talavera), where the local population is weakened and no longer stands up\u201d, explains Aurora G\u00f3mez, a local inhabitant who has launched the ecological association <a href=\"https:\/\/tunubesecamirio.com\/2023\/04\/25\/los-buitres-de-los-centros-de-datos-en-la-mancha-cuando-las-grandes-tecnologicas-vienen-a-extraer-recursos-de-la-iberia-vaciada\/\"><i>Tu Nube Seca Mi R\u00edo<\/i><\/a> (<i>Your Cloud Dries Up My River<\/i>). \u201cThe eternal promise of job creation hides a bitter truth: data centres are highly automated and require highly specialised workers, who usually work remotely from cities.<strong> Value is extracted from the rural<\/strong> and jobs go to the urban\u201d, adds G\u00f3mez.<\/p>\n<p><i>Hola!<\/i> This is Eva and I am a new contributor to Artificial Inequality.
