It is very expressive in my opinion \u2013 reflecting how even those we do not agree with, make good decisions \u2013 whether they are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">genuine <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or just a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">gimmick <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is always the big question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a citizen of the European Union, I was delighted that even amidst our neoliberal reality the EU announced plans to protect my data and wellbeing online to a certain degree. The reaction from many platforms was expected: I either continue business as usual and hand over my data <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">voluntarily<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/noyb.eu\/en\/pay-or-okay-explained-why-more-and-more-websites-make-you-pay-your-privacy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or I pay up to have my privacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The question of national and supranational regulation rises at the intersection of free speech and misinformation as well. Recently, the Brazilian Supreme Court banned, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c5y06vzk3yjo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">then reinstated access to X<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (formerly Twitter) after Musk\u2019s company paid its fines for not banning profiles for spreading misinformation. This combined by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/09\/10\/googles-2point4-billion-euro-fine-upheld-by-europes-top-court.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the massive fines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> levied by the European Union raises yet another question: Are these regulatory fines becoming a calculated business expense now?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Clearly \u2013 politicians should never have the right to silence dissenting voices, and such arguments should be fought against with teeth and claws. However, the freedom of speech is not absolute either: the anonymity the Internet provides is a double edged sword, as it can fuel hatred. We learnt that lession when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2022\/09\/myanmar-facebooks-systems-promoted-violence-against-rohingya-meta-owes-reparations-new-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Facebook\u2019s algorithms knowingly fanned the flames of genocide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Myanmar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stepping back \u2013 the international community have created safeguards against existential risks to humanity before: we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/rebuilding-ozone-layer-how-world-came-together-ultimate-repair-job\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mended the ozone layer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we attempted to inch closer to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/global-issues\/disarmament\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">global disarmament<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and humanity now focuses on solving climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Disclaimer: I do not possess a crystal ball to know where the future of AI is heading and how much an existential threat it poses to humanity. However, if we make an argument against any state building up a nuclear arsenal, we equally need to be mindful of them developing and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unu.edu\/article\/militarization-ai-has-severe-implications-global-security-and-warfare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">weaponizing AI technologies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2013 the questions are endless, and we must ask ourselves: are our regulatory frameworks merely reactions to yesterday\u2019s news, or can we build up systems that stand the test of time?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sziasztok!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> I am Daniel, one of the contributors to Artificial Inequality. Stepping beside my colleagues, I will be writing about regulatory tech policing, how we can build supranational systems, and frameworks for future technological advancements. I argue that the evolved free-for-all tech capitalism fails to provide any safeguards against any threats to our daily lives \u2013 be it existential on a global level, a localized echo chamber online on social media platforms, or personal with data protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coming from a political background I do understand both the popular need for such frameworks to protect ourselves from external threats, while also being mindful of the very thin line of stifling potential advancements that would benefit humanity as a whole.
