Where everything seems shiny, smart and oh-so-predictably biased! As we are witnesses to the ever-growing evolution of tech, that seems to take over all aspects of our lives (social, personal, professional and lately even creative), we\u2019re faced with a curious paradox: while all of this is expected to be the \u201cobjective\u201d, the rational, the calculate agent, it often sides with good-old patriarchy. How so? Take a seat and get ready to dive into the hot mess that is gender bias in artificial intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6><strong>What is techno-patriachy<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Techno-patriarchy is the term that was coined to describe this phenomenon. AI tools such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-amazon-com-jobs-automation-insight\/amazon-scraps-secret-ai-recruiting-tool-that-showed-bias-against-women-idUSKCN1MK08G\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hiring algorithms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that consistently rank male candidates over women, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/feb\/08\/biased-ai-algorithms-racy-women-bodies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">content censorship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> algorithms that tend to flag women\u2019s bodies as sexually explicit or racy, facial recognition algorithms that are means of governmental control (such as cases in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/iran-says-face-recognition-will-id-women-breaking-hijab-laws\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Iran<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/argentina-algorithms-pregnancy-prediction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Argentina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), are just some of the many ways in which tech proves to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">definitely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> not be objective, but rather reinforcing the same patriarchal, male-centered and discriminatory narrative. The tech industry itself is a male-dominated world, with little to no accountability or regulation over these issues- without proper diversity in the hands of the \u201cproducers\u201d, there is little room for tech to improve in this sense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While technology is usually understood as a digital, electronic, abstract \u201cthing\u201d, we forget that its roots are still in the material world. Devices we use daily such as smartphones, laptops, batteries rely on metals such as cobalt that not are not <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">definitely not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sustainable environmentally, nor socially. The Democratic Republic of Congo supplies 60% of the world\u2019s cobalt, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wilpf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/WomenInArtisanalMinesInDRC_web.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">women usually perform in toxic environments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as they work in direct contact with the minerals &#8211; which leads to various health problems sucha as menstrual disruption, miscarriages, cancer and respiratory conditions- all while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ewelinaochab\/2020\/01\/13\/are-these-tech-companies-complicit-in-human-rights-abuses-of-child-cobalt-miners-in-congo\/#640399103b17\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">still earning <\/span><b>half <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of what an adult male makes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Isn\u2019t that crazy?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h6>Who am I<\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hi, I\u2019m Anisa, and as you can tell from my introductory text, my main interest lies in gender-related issues . While having graduated from a Communication Management bachelor\u2019s degree, that didn\u2019t stop me from relating my studies with what really interested me &#8211; so for my final thesis I explored the ways in which media portrays and reinforces gender stereotypes and their sociological implications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Today, I am currently a Master\u2019s student in Communication for Development, and through this blog I hope to explore and learn, together with you, more about the <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">inequalities<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of technology and Artificial Intelligence. I know, it must seem so overwhelming and out of control at times, but little by little, the more we gain knowledge, the more we\u2019ll have power to fight it.
