I am excited to share my thoughts with you in this blog that aims to analyze some contradictions I have found within the decoloniality discourse in academia today. I will do this through the lens of a children’s rights perspective. When scholars state that they are applying ‘decolonial’ thought in their writing, I often see more Eurocentrism and ‘Western’-centrism rather than a new perspective. I feel the need to remind people that there are many historic events that have taken place without Europeans nor Americans being there to witness and document them. Just because something is not written in your ‘Western’ history book, it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. And these events missing from ‘Western’ history books may actually explain quite a bit about the world today as well as reveal different realities than those we see if we project European or American history onto other countries. We may eventually even start to question the use of the term ‘the West’ since it may be more of an obstacle than a category that helps us understand the world.

I have been passionate about societal questions since long before I studied political science and worked in journalism as well as in children’s rights. My interest in the causes of inequality led me to the subject of trauma which, in turn, led me to the subject of movement: theatre, mime, dance, yoga, somatic movement, etc. Everything moves. I have found that being knowledgeable in multiple domains, and seeing the overlaps through associative thinking, have greatly sharpened my tools to make sense of movements and patterns in the world, across time periods, geographical space and cultures. I now find this to be an essential component of my ability to do any political or social science analysis. Direct experience through living in multiple cultures has, of course, also helped me become a little wiser with time (I shall hope). If any of these subjects interest you, please join me on this blogging journey, whether it be by simply reading the blog posts or by interacting with me. I would be happy to know what you think!

Bonjour !
