My name is Catrine, and while I might appear to be a typical, privileged Swedish woman, my upbringing tells a slightly different story. What people don’t see is that I grew up in a home with a single mother who worked in a factory for minimum wage. I won’t say I had a tough childhood because despite this, my needs were met, though my definition of “needs” differs significantly from my children’s today. Through hard work and dedication, I built a successful career, driven not by financial gain but by a desire to make a difference.<\/p>\n

My early schooling was in a diverse neighborhood, a so-called “integration” initiative that placed me in a school with a predominantly immigrant population. This experience, however, shaped my worldview profoundly. At seven years old, concepts like “immigrant” and “racism” were foreign to me. My classmates were simply my friends, regardless of their origins. Today, I’ve chosen to put my truly privileged children in the same school, and you might wonder why. I\u2019m hoping to instill in them this same inclusive mindset, allowing them to form their own perceptions before societal biases take hold.<\/p>\n

Right after secondary school I studied business administration with a dream to work with numbers. But after I had spent a year in Bangkok, got inspired by a woman working in the slums of Bangkok, I shifted my focus to humanitarian work. I dedicated myself to improving access to clean water in impoverished regions of India and China, immersing myself in diverse cultures and witnessing firsthand the challenges faced by marginalized communities. Family life eventually brought me back to my hometown, where I established a media company, raised three children, and settled into a seemingly conventional Swedish existence and started living a real “Svensson life” as we call it here in Sweden.<\/p>\n

Today I live a life of single parenthood, have a full-time job, and part-time studies, and I try to remain committed to social engagement. I believe in the power of sports, particularly football, as a tool for integration and empowerment. Witnessing the growing diversity in local football teams fills me with hope. While my efforts may seem insignificant on a global scale, I believe in the impact of local action in fostering a more inclusive society. I’m not changing the world, but hopefully, I’m helping to change some children’s path into a society that, despite being Sweden, is not always so kind.<\/p>\n

This blog aims to delve into critical issues often overlooked in mainstream discourse. I am particularly interested in how media representations shape our understanding of global development and the North-South divide. While I am eager to explore these broader themes, my primary focus will be on my immediate reality and the potential for individual action. I believe that many people feel powerless to address global inequalities, perceiving the “South” as distant and disconnected from their lives in the “North.” I hope to challenge this notion, emphasizing the interconnectedness of our world and the pervasive legacy of colonialism, even in seemingly progressive societies like Sweden. This blog is an invitation to engage with these complex issues, and to explore the potential for meaningful change, both locally and globally.<\/p>\n

Hej mitt namn \u00e4r Catrine och jag \u00e4r vad m\u00e5nga ser som en priviligierad svensk tjej, f\u00f6dd och uppvuxen i en liten stad i Sverige. Men det m\u00e5nga inte ser \u00e4r att jag v\u00e4xte upp i ett hem med en ensamst\u00e5ende mamma som arbetade p\u00e5 fabrik f\u00f6r minimil\u00f6n. Jag ska inte s\u00e4ga att det \u00e4r synd om mig f\u00f6r jag fick trots detta allt jag \u00f6nskade mig och som jag beh\u00f6vde \u00e4ven om det inte g\u00e5r att j\u00e4mf\u00f6r med vad mina barn anser \u00e4r allt de \u00f6nskar sig och beh\u00f6ver. Jag har n\u00e4mligen studerat, jobbat och tj\u00e4nat ganska bra sen jag blev vuxen utan att f\u00f6r den delen arbeta f\u00f6r att tj\u00e4na pengar utan f\u00f6r att g\u00f6ra skillnad men vi \u00e5terkommer till det.<\/p>\n

N\u00e4r jag b\u00f6rjade skolan bodde jag i ett omr\u00e5de dit alla som kom till Sverige fr\u00e5n olika l\u00e4nder hamnade. Man kallade det f\u00f6r att integrera familjerna i samh\u00e4llet men i sj\u00e4lva verket satte man alla dessa barn i en skola med 80% barn som nyligen kommit till Sverige och sen var det jag och ett par s\u00e5 kallade svenska barn, f\u00f6dda i denna lilla stad.<\/p>\n

Idag har jag sj\u00e4lv valt att s\u00e4tta mina riktigt priviligierade barn i samma skola och man kan ju undra varf\u00f6r. Jo f\u00f6r att n\u00e4r jag var barn s\u00e5g jag inte att de andra barnen inte var svenskar utan de l\u00e4rde sig spr\u00e5ket och var mina v\u00e4nner oavsett vilket land de kom ifr\u00e5n eller vilken bakgrund de hade. Som 7 \u00e5ring f\u00f6rstod jag inte ord som invandrare eller rasism utan alla var vi kompisar som gick i skolan ihop. Detta \u00e4r n\u00e5got jag anser att \u00e4ven mina barn ska l\u00e4ra sig sj\u00e4lva. Jag vill inte att de bara ska se en nationalitet och h\u00f6ra vuxnas f\u00f6rdomar utan de ska se andra som de personer som de \u00e4r. Allt det andra kommer de f\u00e5 uppleva senare men d\u00e5 har de f\u00f6rhoppningsvis en egen bild av olika nationaliteter.<\/p>\n

Det var jag som barn, nu ska vi g\u00e5 vidare till mitt vuxna liv. Direkt efter grundskolan utbildade jag mig till ekonom, jag \u00e4lskade n\u00e4mligen siffror. Sen slutade jag skolan och ins\u00e5g att det inte alls var vad jag ville jobba med. Jag hade n\u00e4mligen gjort ett \u00e5r i Bangkok d\u00e4r jag tr\u00e4ffat en fantastisk kvinna som arbetade f\u00f6r att hj\u00e4lpa de som bodde i Bangkok slummen. Hennes arbete inspirerade mig s\u00e5 pass mycket att jag inte bara f\u00f6rs\u00f6kte hj\u00e4lpa henne s\u00e5 gott jag kunde utan n\u00e4r jag kom hem till Sverige igen valde jag att v\u00e4nda ekonomi\u00e4mnet ryggen och s\u00f6kte mig till annat. Jag b\u00f6rjade jobba med att f\u00f6rse fattiga delar av Indien och Kina med dricksvatten, reste land och rike runt f\u00f6r att se hur olika m\u00e4nniskor bodde utanf\u00f6r de delar man i vanliga fall bes\u00f6ker f\u00f6r att se vad man mer kunde g\u00f6ra. Jag fick dock sluta med det n\u00e4r tankarna p\u00e5 familj tog \u00f6ver. Jag kunde n\u00e4mligen inte flyga flera dagar i veckan n\u00e4r jag var gravid eller fick sm\u00e5barn. Jag flyttade tillbaka till min lilla stad, startade ett framg\u00e5ngsrikt medief\u00f6retag, fick 3 barn och b\u00f6rjade leva ett riktigt Svensson liv som vi kallar det h\u00e4r i Sverige.<\/p>\n

F\u00f6r mig \u00e4r det viktigt att ha en stabilitet i familjen, \u00e4ven om jag idag \u00e4r en ensamst\u00e5ende 3 barns mamma med 2 hundar, ett heltidsjobb, en g\u00e5rd p\u00e5 landet och studerar p\u00e5 halvtid. M\u00e5nga anser att jag tar mig vatten \u00f6ver huvudet n\u00e4r jag \u00e4ven arbetar f\u00f6r att hj\u00e4lpa de barn som kommer till v\u00e5r lilla stad genom idrott, fr\u00e4mst fotboll. Jag har inte n\u00e4mnt fotboll tidigare f\u00f6r att n\u00e4r jag v\u00e4xte upp som fotbollsspelare var det inte en enda tjej i laget som inte var f\u00f6dd i v\u00e5r lilla stad.<\/p>\n

Jag tror p\u00e5 styrkan i att anv\u00e4nda sport som en del i att hj\u00e4lpa barn in i samh\u00e4llet och det gl\u00e4der mig att jag idag ser fler och fler b\u00e5de tjejer och killar spela fotboll som inte \u00e4r f\u00f6dda i Sverige eller som har f\u00f6r\u00e4ldrar som inte \u00e4r f\u00f6dda i landet. H\u00e4r vet jag att jag p\u00e5 min lilla plats i min lilla stad kan g\u00f6ra skillnad. Jag \u00e4ndrar inte v\u00e4rlden men f\u00f6rhoppningsvis \u00e4r jag med och \u00e4ndra n\u00e5gra barns v\u00e4g in i ett samh\u00e4lle som trots att det \u00e4r Sverige inte alltid \u00e4r s\u00e5 sn\u00e4llt.<\/p>\n

I denna blogg vill jag gr\u00e4va i n\u00e5gra kritiska fr\u00e5gor som ofta f\u00f6rbises eller inte ges tillr\u00e4ckligt utrymme. En fr\u00e5ga som verkligen intresserar mig \u00e4r hur media formar v\u00e5r syn p\u00e5 utveckling, p\u00e5 nord och syd. \u00c4ven om jag \u00e4r ytterst intresserad av att l\u00e4sa om och l\u00e4ra mig mer om detta, vill jag i bloggen titta n\u00e4rmare p\u00e5 min verklighet som jag lever i idag. Vad kan jag g\u00f6ra f\u00f6r de som har det s\u00e4mre st\u00e4llt \u00e4n mig. N\u00e5gonstans tror jag att gemene man inte tror att den kan g\u00f6ra n\u00e5got f\u00f6r s\u00f6dra delen av v\u00e4rlden \u00e4r alldeles f\u00f6r l\u00e5ngt bort fr\u00e5n oss h\u00e4r uppe i norr. Jag vill skapa utrymme f\u00f6r ett nytt perspektiv d\u00e4r vi inte bara ser v\u00e4lden i syd och nord utan d\u00e4r vi ser att den idag \u00e4r mycket mer komplex och fr\u00e5gor som handlar om kolonialism finns n\u00e4rmare oss i norr \u00e4n vi tror.<\/p>\n
