In exploring the role that inter-religious dialogue can play in preventing further conflict and promoting peace in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, I conducted interviews with two individuals who brought distinct perspectives to the topic. The first was an in-person interview with the director of a local civil society organization (CSO) working in the districts most affected by terrorism. Being from Cabo Delgado, the director brought unique local insight into the origins of the conflict and possible peace-building solutions. The second interview was conducted over WhatsApp video with a young motorcycle taxi driver from Moc\u00edmboa da Praia, one of the districts most affected by terrorism. Each interview setting presented unique advantages and limitations from a communication for development and research perspective, which I will explore below.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Interview 1: An In-Person Conversation with the CSO Director<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Reaching Out and Setting Up the Interview<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

To initiate the interview with the CSO director, I leveraged my access to a CSO database from Cabo Delgado through my work, where I identified his organization as one that was doing critical work in peace-building. I reached out by email, introducing myself and explaining my intentions. Given the director\u2019s busy schedule and frequent travel, arranging a meeting in Maputo\u2014where I live\u2014was challenging. Due to the nature of his work, the director is rarely in the capital, and when he is, his schedule is typically filled with meetings and conferences. Eventually, we agreed to meet over lunch, where we conducted the interview while eating to accommodate his time constraints.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Setting and Flow<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The in-person setting allowed for a more natural conversation flow, enhanced by the shared space and the ability to observe non-verbal cues. While I came prepared with structured questions, the interview allowed us to explore tangential topics, creating space for deeper insights into the local perspectives on inter-religious dialogue and conflict resolution. Being physically present also fostered a sense of trust, which was essential for discussing sensitive issues around the region\u2019s socio-religious dynamics and peace-building strategies. The director\u2019s experience in the field enabled him to provide contextually rich insights into how inter-religious dialogue is viewed by those directly involved in the peace process.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Advantages of the In-Person Setting<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

From a communication for development perspective, the in-person interview aligns well with participatory research principles. The setting allowed for empathy, adaptation, and a conversational flow that fostered a deeper understanding of the local context. This method encouraged the interviewee to explore topics that might have been constrained in a more formal setting, allowing the conversation to flow in unexpected but fruitful directions. His nuanced understanding of Cabo Delgado\u2019s socio-political landscape provided insights into the community\u2019s unique approach to inter-religious dialogue and its role in conflict prevention.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Limitations of the In-Person Setting<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Despite its advantages, arranging the in-person interview had its logistical challenges. The director\u2019s limited availability in Maputo required significant coordination, and finding a mutually convenient time proved difficult. Meeting over lunch was a pragmatic solution, but this type of scheduling constraint highlights a disadvantage of in-person interviews, especially when interviewing high-demand professionals with tight schedules.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Interview 2: WhatsApp Video Call with a Motorcycle Taxi Driver<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Reaching Out and Setting Up the Interview\u00a0<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

For the WhatsApp interview, I contacted a group of motorcycle taxi drivers I had previously interviewed as part of my work and asked them to connect me with a friend who had firsthand experience with the ongoing conflict in Moc\u00edmboa da Praia. I had not previously met this individual, which added an element of remoteness to the interview, and the setup depended on the intermediary connections of his colleagues.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Setting and Flow<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The WhatsApp video interview provided a different experience, offering visual connection but a more constrained interaction. The young driver\u2019s responses were brief and focused on the set questions without exploring the topic further. While his input provided valuable insight into grassroots perspectives on inter-religious dialogue, it lacked the depth and organic flow of the in-person interview. The remote setting limited the interaction, and the interviewee mostly responded to the direct questions without diverging into additional topics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Advantages of the WhatsApp Interview\u00a0\u00a0<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Despite its limitations, this format proved highly accessible and flexible, especially for interviewing people in remote or conflict-affected areas. The digital setup saved time and resources and allowed the driver to participate without needing to meet face-to-face. From a research perspective, the video call was effective for gathering direct data from those affected by the conflict while minimizing the risks associated with physical presence in a volatile area. His location in a high-risk area added relevance to his insights on how inter-religious dialogue might impact daily life and peace-building in the region.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Limitations of the WhatsApp Interview<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

However, the remote nature of this interview limited the ability to establish rapport, which impacted the depth of the responses. Without the benefits of non-verbal communication cues and an informal setting, it was challenging to encourage more elaborate responses from the interviewee. The constraints of the video format may have made the interviewee hesitant to engage deeply with sensitive topics, highlighting a drawback of remote interviews for topics that require openness and nuance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Final Considerations<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

From a communication for development perspective, the in-person interview aligns with participatory research values, allowing the interviewee to play a more active role in shaping the conversation. This dynamic provided a deeper, contextually enriched dialogue on the role of inter-religious dialogue in conflict prevention. The CSO director\u2019s detailed knowledge of Cabo Delgado\u2019s cultural landscape allowed the discussion to cover the importance of inter-religious dialogue more comprehensively, emphasizing its potential role in fostering peace and unity in the community.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The WhatsApp interview, though more limited in interaction, reflects the potential of digital tools to democratize access to research by reaching respondents in remote or dangerous locations. This approach is highly inclusive and allows those directly affected by conflict to participate in the conversation without facing physical risk. However, the limited engagement and shorter responses suggest that digital formats may not be ideal for topics requiring depth and nuanced understanding.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

**Explorar o Papel do Di\u00e1logo Inter-Religioso na Promo\u00e7\u00e3o da Paz em Cabo Delgado: Perspetivas de Duas Entrevistas Distintas**<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Ao explorar o papel que o di\u00e1logo inter-religioso pode desempenhar na preven\u00e7\u00e3o de conflitos e na promo\u00e7\u00e3o da paz em Cabo Delgado, Mo\u00e7ambique, realizei entrevistas com duas pessoas que trouxeram perspetivas distintas sobre o tema. A primeira foi uma entrevista presencial com o diretor de uma organiza\u00e7\u00e3o da sociedade civil (OSC) local que trabalha nos distritos mais afetados pelo terrorismo. Sendo natural de Cabo Delgado, o diretor trouxe uma vis\u00e3o local \u00fanica sobre as origens do conflito e poss\u00edveis solu\u00e7\u00f5es de constru\u00e7\u00e3o da paz. A segunda entrevista foi realizada por v\u00eddeo no WhatsApp com um jovem motorista de moto-t\u00e1xi de Moc\u00edmboa da Praia, um dos distritos mais afetados pelo terrorismo. Cada cen\u00e1rio de entrevista apresentou vantagens e limita\u00e7\u00f5es \u00fanicas do ponto de vista da comunica\u00e7\u00e3o para o desenvolvimento e da pesquisa, as quais explorarei abaixo.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Entrevista 1: Uma Conversa Presencial com o Diretor da OSC<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Contactar e Organizar a Entrevista<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Para iniciar a entrevista com o diretor da OSC, aproveitei o acesso a uma base de dados de OSCs de Cabo Delgado que tenho atrav\u00e9s do meu trabalho, onde identifiquei a organiza\u00e7\u00e3o dele como uma das que estavam a desenvolver trabalho cr\u00edtico na constru\u00e7\u00e3o da paz. Entrei em contacto por e-mail, apresentando-me e explicando as minhas inten\u00e7\u00f5es. Dado o hor\u00e1rio ocupado do diretor e as suas viagens frequentes, organizar uma reuni\u00e3o em Maputo \u2014 onde vivo \u2014 foi um desafio. Devido \u00e0 natureza do seu trabalho, o diretor raramente est\u00e1 na capital e, quando est\u00e1, o seu hor\u00e1rio geralmente est\u00e1 preenchido com reuni\u00f5es e confer\u00eancias. Finalmente, concord\u00e1mos em nos encontrar durante o almo\u00e7o, onde realiz\u00e1mos a entrevista enquanto com\u00edamos para acomodar as suas limita\u00e7\u00f5es de tempo.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Ambiente e Fluxo\u00a0<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A configura\u00e7\u00e3o presencial permitiu um fluxo de conversa mais natural, aprimorado pelo espa\u00e7o partilhado e pela capacidade de observar as pistas n\u00e3o-verbais. Embora eu tivesse preparado perguntas estruturadas, a entrevista permitiu-nos explorar t\u00f3picos tangenciais, criando espa\u00e7o para insights mais profundos sobre as perspetivas locais acerca do di\u00e1logo inter-religioso e da resolu\u00e7\u00e3o de conflitos. Estar presente fisicamente tamb\u00e9m fomentou um sentimento de confian\u00e7a, essencial para discutir quest\u00f5es sens\u00edveis relacionadas com a din\u00e2mica s\u00f3cio-religiosa da regi\u00e3o e as estrat\u00e9gias de constru\u00e7\u00e3o da paz. A experi\u00eancia do diretor no terreno permitiu-lhe fornecer insights ricos em contexto sobre como o di\u00e1logo inter-religioso \u00e9 visto por aqueles diretamente envolvidos no processo de paz.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Vantagens do Ambiente Presencial<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Do ponto de vista da comunica\u00e7\u00e3o para o desenvolvimento, a entrevista presencial alinha-se bem com os princ\u00edpios da investiga\u00e7\u00e3o participativa. O ambiente permitiu empatia, adapta\u00e7\u00e3o e um fluxo de conversa que favoreceu uma compreens\u00e3o mais profunda do contexto local. Este m\u00e9todo incentivou o entrevistado a explorar temas que poderiam ter sido limitados num ambiente mais formal, permitindo que a conversa flu\u00edsse em dire\u00e7\u00f5es inesperadas mas frut\u00edferas. O seu entendimento nuan\u00e7ado do panorama sociopol\u00edtico de Cabo Delgado proporcionou insights sobre a abordagem \u00fanica da comunidade ao di\u00e1logo inter-religioso e o seu papel na preven\u00e7\u00e3o de conflitos.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Limita\u00e7\u00f5es do Ambiente Presencial<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Apesar das suas vantagens, organizar a entrevista presencial teve os seus desafios log\u00edsticos. A disponibilidade limitada do diretor em Maputo exigiu uma coordena\u00e7\u00e3o significativa e encontrar um hor\u00e1rio mutuamente conveniente mostrou-se dif\u00edcil. Reunirmo-nos durante o almo\u00e7o foi uma solu\u00e7\u00e3o pragm\u00e1tica, mas este tipo de restri\u00e7\u00e3o de hor\u00e1rio destaca uma desvantagem das entrevistas presenciais, especialmente ao entrevistar profissionais de alta demanda com hor\u00e1rios apertados.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Entrevista 2: Chamada de V\u00eddeo no WhatsApp com um Motorista de Moto-T\u00e1xi<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Para a entrevista no WhatsApp, contactei um grupo de motoristas de moto-t\u00e1xi que eu j\u00e1 tinha entrevistado anteriormente no \u00e2mbito do meu trabalho e pedi-lhes que me colocassem em contacto com um amigo que tivesse experi\u00eancia direta com o conflito em curso em Moc\u00edmboa da Praia. Eu n\u00e3o conhecia este indiv\u00edduo anteriormente, o que adicionou um elemento de distanciamento \u00e0 entrevista, e a configura\u00e7\u00e3o dependia das conex\u00f5es intermedi\u00e1rias dos seus colegas.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Ambiente e Fluxo<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A entrevista em v\u00eddeo pelo WhatsApp proporcionou uma experi\u00eancia diferente, oferecendo uma liga\u00e7\u00e3o visual mas uma intera\u00e7\u00e3o mais limitada. As respostas do jovem motorista foram breves e focadas nas perguntas estabelecidas, sem explorar mais profundamente o tema. Embora o seu contributo tenha fornecido uma perspetiva valiosa sobre o di\u00e1logo inter-religioso a partir das bases, faltou-lhe a profundidade e o fluxo org\u00e2nico da entrevista presencial. O ambiente remoto limitou a intera\u00e7\u00e3o, e o entrevistado respondeu principalmente \u00e0s perguntas diretas sem se desviar para t\u00f3picos adicionais.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Vantagens da Entrevista no WhatsApp<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Apesar das suas limita\u00e7\u00f5es, este formato provou ser altamente acess\u00edvel e flex\u00edvel, especialmente para entrevistar pessoas em \u00e1reas remotas ou afetadas por conflitos. A configura\u00e7\u00e3o digital economizou tempo e recursos e permitiu que o motorista participasse sem a necessidade de se encontrar pessoalmente. Do ponto de vista da pesquisa, a chamada de v\u00eddeo foi eficaz para recolher dados diretos das pessoas afetadas pelo conflito, minimizando os riscos associados \u00e0 presen\u00e7a f\u00edsica numa \u00e1rea vol\u00e1til. A localiza\u00e7\u00e3o do entrevistado numa \u00e1rea de alto risco acrescentou relev\u00e2ncia \u00e0s suas perspetivas sobre como o di\u00e1logo inter-religioso pode impactar a vida quotidiana e a constru\u00e7\u00e3o da paz na regi\u00e3o.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Limita\u00e7\u00f5es da Entrevista no WhatsApp<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

No entanto, a natureza remota desta entrevista limitou a capacidade de estabelecer uma rela\u00e7\u00e3o, o que afetou a profundidade das respostas. Sem os benef\u00edcios das pistas de comunica\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o-verbal e de um ambiente informal, foi dif\u00edcil incentivar respostas mais elaboradas do entrevistado. As limita\u00e7\u00f5es do formato de v\u00eddeo podem ter feito o entrevistado hesitar em se envolver profundamente com t\u00f3picos sens\u00edveis, destacando uma desvantagem das entrevistas remotas para t\u00f3picos que requerem abertura e nuance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Do ponto de vista da comunica\u00e7\u00e3o para o desenvolvimento, a entrevista presencial alinha-se com os valores da investiga\u00e7\u00e3o participativa, permitindo que o entrevistado desempenhe um papel mais ativo na forma\u00e7\u00e3o da conversa. Esta din\u00e2mica proporcionou um di\u00e1logo mais profundo e rico em contexto sobre o papel do di\u00e1logo inter-religioso na preven\u00e7\u00e3o de conflitos. O conhecimento detalhado do diretor da OSC sobre o panorama cultural de Cabo Delgado permitiu que a discuss\u00e3o abrangesse a import\u00e2ncia do di\u00e1logo inter-religioso de forma mais abrangente, enfatizando o seu potencial papel na promo\u00e7\u00e3o da paz e da unidade na comunidade.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

A entrevista no WhatsApp, embora mais limitada em intera\u00e7\u00e3o, reflete o potencial das ferramentas digitais para democratizar o acesso \u00e0 pesquisa, alcan\u00e7ando entrevistados em locais remotos ou perigosos. Esta abordagem \u00e9 altamente inclusiva e permite que aqueles diretamente afetados pelo conflito participem na conversa sem enfrentar riscos f\u00edsicos.
