You&#8217;ve probably heard it being mentioned somewhere lately: blockchain technology. The concept has taken on an almost magic aura. That&#8217;s because it is complicated concept, and it may be daunting to learn about if you&#8217;re not already familiar with its practical utilization. I would like to give some insights into this magical, exciting and promising technology.<\/p>\n<p>While it has the potential to impact the entire world as a disrupting force, I want to focus on the impact it could have on countries and regions in the Global South. The reason for this is simple, while global adoption of blockchain technology is skyrocketing, adoption in many countries in the Global South far exceeds that of countries in the Global North. Take the Global Crypto Adoption Index example to the right, which measures the trading and payments with cryptocurrencies. Many Global South countries rank in the top 20 worldwide, with not even a single EU country making the cut!<\/p>\n<p>In the coming weeks I will cover the basic fundamentals of this technology, discuss real world applications and the opportunities and challenges we face in implementing this technology in the Global South, with a focus on Africa.
