How does impactful activism change the narrative?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanrightsfilmfestivalberlin.de\/en\">Human Rights Film Festival Berlin<\/a> took place on 16-25 September 2021 under the theme \u201cThe Art of Change\u201d. Its programme included forty documentaries from around the world on prevalent topics such as climate change crisis, gender equality and freedom of expression.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Successful storytelling\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This blog post will address key messages selected from the \u201cStorytelling &amp; Activism\u201d panel discussion held in frames of the Festival on 23 September. The panelists exchanged views on their <strong>successful and impactful storytelling projects<\/strong> and considered <strong>synergies <\/strong>between work of activists, film directors and artists.<\/p>\n<p>Festival Director <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/anna_apublic?lang=en\">Anna Ramskogler-Witt<\/a> moderated the discussion with the invited guests:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umamishranewbery.com\/\">Uma Mishra<\/a>, human rights and women rights Campaigner.<\/li>\n<li>Katja Riemann, German Director and Actress, debuting in the Festival with her first film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanrightsfilmfestivalberlin.de\/en\/and-here-we-are\">\u201c\u2026 And Here We Are\u201d<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Markus Beeco, Secretary General of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.de\/\">Amnesty International Germany<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Martina Dase, Director of Media &amp; Strategic Communications at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savethechildren.de\/\">Save the Children Germany<\/a>, the Festival\u2019s main partner. Festival\u2019s film selection by Save the Children was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanrightsfilmfestivalberlin.de\/en\/films\/film-program\/partner-series\/right-change-save-children\">\u201cThe Right to Change (Save The Children)\u201d<\/a> that presents three films about children and young people struggling with traumas of terror, war and displacement.<\/li>\n<li>Thimali Kodikara, NY based co-host of a feminist poscast on climate change <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mothersofinvention.online\/\">Mothers of Invention<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Adesua Okosun, Film Director from Nigeria, founder of Young Africa Media platform.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Compassion fatigue? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Traditional humanitarian organizations might speak about a compassion fatigue. A cause for it could be telling \u201cthe similar story again and again and always in similar manner\u201d, according to Martina Dase from Save the Children. She claimed that <strong>no,<\/strong> <strong>compassion is still there<\/strong> but in order to attain it, stories need to be told in a novel way that is not about simply passing on a meaningful story. It is about Syrian war that was transferred to the UK. In the video, a nine years old girl celebrates her birthday when suddenly a civil war breaks out in London. The guiding principle in <strong>impactful activism<\/strong> is to depict the harsh reality, to speak about the complex context and to highlight the facts.<\/p>\n<p>In activism, when portraying a story of someone whose voice has been silenced, it is important to always keep in mind their authentic voice, to ensure its representation and not to compromise it. Impactful storytelling is about motivating people to join in and <strong>to<\/strong> <strong>have a joint story<\/strong>, a joint narrative together with \u201cthose who are somewhere else\u201d.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Bringing in new audiences<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>To gather and combine different points of view, at the same time the same issue can be looked at from a perspective of someone from the Global South and someone from the Global North. This way we can see how their approaches differ. In activism, this method helps to get people relate to an issue in new, unusual ways.<\/p>\n<p>Standard narratives can be changed by taking a different perspective \u2013 for example, using humor when talking about development issues and social justice.
