Many media organizations have in recent years adopted constructive ways of reporting, also known as solutions journalism. Unlike traditional journalism that often highlights negative events and issues, solutions journalism focuses on exploring potential solutions to existing problems.

From conflicts to floods, pandemics to poverty, climate change to crime, the world’s problems seem to be unending. While it is important to let people know about these events, excessive focus on problems and crises can lead to feelings of despair and hopelessness. Solutions journalism offers a more optimistic outlook, which can combat apathy and inspire a sense of agency.

BBC’s “People Fixing the World”, Fast Company’s “Impact”, The New York Times’ “Fixes”, and Nigeria Health Watch are just a few of the many news outlets with dedicated solutions journalism sections.

Cycling solutions-oriented stories into your normal media consumption routine will make a world of difference in how you view the world and the collective issues we face. You might even be inspired by a solution and move it forward in your own community!

We will be analyzing and sharing some of our favorite stories in this blog, and we hope you are inspired to embed the practices of solutions journalism into your life.
