The starving doll-eyed infant, the tents with big blue logos, the adolescent girl carrying a barrel of water on her head. The celebrity in the African classroom, the waving groups of children, the text begging you to please donate. For me, it always follows with a lump in my stomach.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though these aid advertisement claims to be for a good cause, they are disheartening. The portrayal of us versus the other, the saviour and the one in need of saving, the wealthy \u2018west\u2019 and the poor \u2018third world country.\u2019 An influential international aid organisation telling a story that is not theirs to tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"UNICEF USA: &quot;These Children are Facing Death Every Day&quot; - Alyssa Milano\" width=\"993\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DjvslRtCA5I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>An example from UNICEF USA.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some argue that these practices and attitudes mirror a colonial era and its structural racism and reinforce the colonial dynamics of the \u2018white saviour.\u2019 Others say these humanitarian intervention methods were created in the first place to serve Eurocentric interests and its hierarchical worldview and commemorated to ensure that aid recipients stay less powerful than donors. Most agree that there is a need for a substantial shift in power dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These derogatory communication strategies often furthermore reflect aid organisations\u2019 decision-making. In an article from 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewhumanitarian.org\/in-depth\/ground-inside-push-reshape-local-aid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the New Humanitarian<\/a> reports that UN agencies and leading international NGOs often overshadow local aid organisations when a crisis hits, leading to top-down interventions with little to no knowledge of local needs, funding targeting non-necessities and local organisations struggling to survive. In 2020, 200 organisations, primarily from the Global South, wrote an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendemocracy.net\/en\/transformation\/an-open-letter-to-international-ngos-who-are-looking-to-localise-their-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open letter<\/a> to international NGOs, pleading for a shift in power relations within the international aid- and development sector.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmu.mau.se\/nmict23group4\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2023\/09\/Structural-Racism-SaveTheChildren.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-138\" width=\"498\" height=\"646\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpmu.mau.se\/nmict23group4\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2023\/09\/Structural-Racism-SaveTheChildren.png 484w, https:\/\/wpmu.mau.se\/nmict23group4\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/88\/2023\/09\/Structural-Racism-SaveTheChildren-231x300.png 231w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Picture from <a href=\"https:\/\/resourcecentre.savethechildren.net\/document\/time-decolonize-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Save the Children: Time to Decolonize Aid. 2021, 23.<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Later the same year, Danny Sriskandarajah, Chief Executive of Oxfam GB, published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendemocracy.net\/en\/ngos-must-decolonise-aid-relief-says-oxfam-uk-ceo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> answering the open letter. Sriskandarajah discusses the importance of accountability and striving for positive change and promises changes within Oxfam\u2019s strategies and operations to change power relations within the sector by \u2018decolonising aid\u2019. During the following years, other organisations, such as<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/plan-international.org\/blog\/2022\/03\/22\/thoughts-on-decolonising-the-aid-sector-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Plan International<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/resourcecentre.savethechildren.net\/document\/time-decolonize-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Save the Children<\/a>, would join the mission. But what does \u2018decolonising aid\u2019 entail? And what does it mean for the future of aid communication?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my upcoming posts, we will dive deeper into the subject of decolonising aid to learn about its positive and negative aspects and how this approach could generate success for using ICTs for development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have all seen the pictures and heard sad music.
