Empowering Bodily Autonomy in the Digital Age: The Unstoppable Movement on International Safe Abortion Day

Standing Strong for Reproductive Rights in a Digital World

Two weeks ago, September 28th marked a significant date in the global calendar – International Safe Abortion Day, also known as #Sept28. It’s a day dedicated to raising awareness about safe and accessible abortion services. In our increasingly digital world, the fight for bodily autonomy takes on new dimensions. Over the years, grassroots movements like #Abortionsolidarity and the #UnstoppableMovement have emerged, embodying the relentless spirit of those fighting for reproductive rights. In this blog post, we delve into the significance of these hashtags and their role in advocating for reproductive justice, while considering the challenges of the digital age.

From Humble Beginnings to a Global Movement in a Digital Era

International Safe Abortion Day traces its roots back to 1990 when the Women’s Global Network for Reproductive Rights (WGNRR) first acknowledged its significance. This day serves as a beacon for advocating safe and accessible abortion services worldwide. In today’s digital age, hashtags like #Abortionsolidarity and #UnstoppableMovement have emerged as significant rallying points on social media platforms where activists, organizations, and individuals come together in their quest for reproductive rights and access to safe abortions.

A Global Call to Action, Amplified by Technology

On International Safe Abortion Day, the #UnstoppableMovement orchestrated a series of powerful actions and activities, leveraging digital tools and platforms. These included online webinars, street protests, and rallies featuring prominent speakers and activists. The digital age allowed these movements to reach a global audience, emphasizing the urgency of ensuring reproductive rights for all.

Digital Solidarity Transcending Boundaries

The impact of #Abortionsolidarity and #UnstoppableMovement has been profound, facilitated by the digital age’s ability to amplify voices and connect advocates globally. These movements ignited conversations surrounding reproductive rights and highlighted the struggles of individuals seeking safe abortions. They garnered support from diverse quarters – individuals, organizations, and even politicians – demonstrating the universal call for reproductive justice.

Navigating Digital Landscapes and Barriers to Reproductive Rights

Despite significant progress, the #Abortionsolidarity and #UnstoppableMovement hashtags face opposition from those seeking to restrict reproductive rights, both in the physical and digital realms. Activists persistently counter these challenges, emphasizing that the fight for bodily autonomy extends to the digital spaces where misinformation and stigma can proliferate.

Digital Narratives, Real Stories

Amidst the hashtags, individual voices impacted by the lack of safe abortion access rang out. Dr Marijike Alblas shared her story as a healthcare professional in a tweet via Mmoho, an advocacy campaign that was developed by Ibis Reproductive Health and partners working to advance sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of young people in South Africa. Dr Alblas believes that a safe abortion movement is very important because abortion is still taboo worldwide. In the tweet she is quoted saying this is the reason “why we need to support each other”. Although South Africa has one of the most liberal laws in the world, it doesn’t mean abortion services are accessible to women. Approximately 50% of women opt for back street abortions and many hospitals are confronted daily by the consequences of these unsafe abortions. Many women suffer complications and continue to die from unsafe abortions.
