Although South Africa has one of the most liberal laws in the world, it doesn’t mean abortion services are accessible to women. Approximately 50% of women opt for back street abortions and many hospitals are confronted daily by the consequences of these unsafe abortions. Many women suffer complications and continue to die from unsafe abortions.
