Dr Marijike Alblas shared her story as a healthcare professional in a tweet<\/a> via Mmoho, an advocacy campaign that was developed by Ibis Reproductive Health and partners working to advance sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of young people in South Africa. Dr Alblas believes that a safe abortion movement is very important because abortion is still taboo worldwide. In the tweet she is quoted saying this is the reason \u201cwhy we need to support each other\u201d. Although South Africa has one of the most liberal laws in the world, it doesn\u2019t mean abortion services are accessible to women. Approximately 50% of women opt for back street abortions and many hospitals are confronted daily by the consequences of these unsafe abortions. Many women suffer complications and continue to die from unsafe abortions.<\/p>\n\n\n
