Five4ThePeople is the five of us writing for and about development causes that we are passionate about, in order to raise awareness about individuals or groups that may not have a voice or platform to be heard.
We will be focusing our discussions around new media activism, which is often derived from ideas and observations from Global South vs Global North. Through our blog, we hope to showcase the interconnectedness of the world, while also highlighting various individual voices and topics that transcend traditional silos, such as gender, age, skin colour, education, wealth, and social construct.
Our goal is to start conversations through which we hope to raise awareness on how issues of development are everywhere. As indicated through the blog’s name, we will engage in discussions surrounding activism, as well as inactivism, and how technology access and distribution remains unequal and inequitable in 2020. In other words, while we acknowledge that new media has disrupted communication for and about development, we aim to highlight ways in which online activism is still very much in the hands of the elite, be it in the North or the South.
